16th Century Duries
The 1500s were when the Duries first rose to prominence -
as senior churchmen, and with important roles within the State of Scotland
(which was much the same thing at that time.
In outline:
 George Durie
was Abbott and Commendator of Dunfermline - the last Abbott before the
Reformation, and reckoned 1st of Craigluscar
some of his sons, legitimated and otherwise, including
the two Jesuits
His brother, Andrew Durie, was Abbott of Melrose and
then Bishop of Galloway, who had no children
Their eldest brother,
Robert Durie of Durie, inherited
the Scoonie lands
His son-in-law, Henry Kemp, who changed his name to
Durie
