• Notes

  John Barrow came from humble stock in Barrow in Furness. Well educated and spoke latin,french and mandarin. Accompanied Lord McCartney to Britains first embassy in China.Later explored the interior of South Africa & entrusted with task of reconciling Boers and Kaffirs. Settled in SA marrying Anna Maria Truter daughter of SStellenbosh judge. Returned to England 1803. Appointed 2nd Secretary of Admiralty and bought Admiralty Board, Navy Board into single department. After victory in Trafalgar and Waterloo responsible for exiling Napoleo to St. Helena. Wrote report on 'Mutiny of the Bounty' and was friend of family of Fletcher Christian. He organised expeditions to West Africa and north polar region. including those of Sir John Ross, Sir James Clark and Sir John Franklin to find the north/west passage. Fellow of Royal Society and founded the Royal Geographical Society. Barrow Point on norther tip of Alaska and Barrow Strait are named after him and there is a Barrow Monument at Ulverstone name after him. Sir Robert Peel conferred baronetcy on him in l835. He retired in l845 devoted time to writing a history of the modern Arctic voyages of discovery and his autobiography.
